![]() Reaction to the book wasn't all good - with some claiming that Douglass couldn't have wrote it because he was too uneducated. He went to Britain and Ireland, where supporters raised the money to purchase his emancipation. ![]() Douglass actually had to leave America after the book came out, for fear he might be recaptured by his owner. Within a few months of it's publication, the book had sold five thousand copies, and by 1860 that had risen to thirty thousand.
